Sony Ericsson Xperia X2a appears on US site screaming 'I'm coming!
Retrieved 236 Days Ago
From: Engadget Blog     Category: Technology
(By "Richard Lai") Whoa! After two months of delay Sony Ericsson's finally done something with the Xperia X2 -- giving it an extra 'a' (for North America) instead of pushing it out to us mere mortals. Mind you, the number of times we've seen this thing -- even as a KIRF -- may fool you into thinking it's been out forever, but the reality is it's slowly morphing into a unicorn. You know what though? If we wait for another two months, the X2 / X2a might even get a piece of that Windows Mobile 7 action. Or Windows Mobile 8, when SE's eventually done with its siesta.Sony Ericsson Xperia X2a appears on US site screaming 'I'm coming!' originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 11 Jan 2010 14:50:00 EST. (By "Richard Lawler") Sherwood has been running with the network connectivity ball ever since it adopted Verismo's VuNow hardware into its receivers. We dropped by their booth before departing CES to get a quick look at the functionality in action (video embedded after the break), plus put our hands and eyes on the company's R-904 NetBoxx, RD-7505 receiver and iNet 2.0 tabletop radio & internet streamer. Nokia N900 gets first software update, but don't expect much

From: Engadget Blog     Category: Technology     Smart Keywords: update (5), nokia (4), maemo (3)
(By "Chris Ziegler") Nokia has announced that it has started pushing the N900's very first post-launch update, but apparently it's not anything crazy like Maemo 6 (yeah, we know it's not even close to ready, but you know you want it) or system-wide portrait orientation support -- instead, it's just a minor bump designed to prepare the set for the upcoming launch of the Maemo-flavored Ovi Store. That's great news for anyone looking for a more unified way to get paid apps on the phone, a significant step towards making Maemo a more consumer-friendly platform than it is at the present. Look for the update to be available globally within the next day or so, both over-the-air and via Nokia Software Update on your desktop. Droid security flaw makes lock screen a mere inconvenience for evil-doers

(By "Chris Ziegler") You might recall Apple having a hard time keeping its lock screen locked at one point, and it looks like we've got a common theme brewing here now that Android's suffering from the same drama. Turns out that Android 2.0.1 -- the build currently deployed on the Droid -- suffers from a flaw whereby you can back out to a locked phone's home screen simply by pressing the Back button after accepting an incoming call. Of course, you'd either have to know a phone's number or wait for a call to actually take advantage of this, but we'd argue that it's a pretty low barrier of entry. The bright side of the story, we suppose, is that the phone goes back to being locked as soon as the call ends, but then again it doesn't take much time to peep your juicy emails. Google's aware of the issue, so …

HD DVD rides again: TCL brings China Blue HD & Blu-ray together for a CES face-off
Retrieved 236 Days Ago
From: Engadget Blog     Category: Technology
(By "Richard Lawler") Ah, HD DVD, our old friend - we thought we'd never see you again. But there was no mistaking it, here's the logo tucked away in Chinese manufacturer TCL's booth on a China Blue HD deck next to a similar Blu-ray player. The Blu-ray demo appeared to be down when we stopped by making this not much of a fight -- although with recent gains by CBHD like adding studio support from Paramount, it may want to take this challenger more seriously. We'll move the threat level on this conflict to yellow. Tesla taps Panasonic to create next-generation EV battery packs
Retrieved 236 Days Ago
From: Engadget Blog     Category: Technology
(By "Darren Murph") As Tesla continues on its commendable journey to surpass Ford, GM, Toyota and everyone else in total sales, it's evidently hoping a tie-up with Panasonic will help it accomplish said goal. The two outfits have just agreed to work together in order to develop next-generation battery packs to be used within electric vehicles, which are based around "Nickel-based Lithium ion chemistry." It sounds as if the two are hoping the collaborative effort will actually be mutually beneficial, though both have been coy about when or where this research will lead to implementable results. Hopefully we'll end up with a Model S that can roll 724 miles on a single charge, but it's not like we'd complain (much) if we only got 722.Tesla taps Panasonic to create next-generation EV battery packs originally …

From: Engadget Blog     Category: Technology
(By "Darren Murph") Remember that 4TB TeraStation NAS that we saw surface in Japan last September? Liar. We know you're faking it just to save face, but we'll let you slide -- next time, just be straight with us, cool? The TeraStation III WSS has just been cleared for takeoff here in America, boasting four quick-swap SATA hard drives, Windows Storage Server 2003 R2 Express Edition and native Active Directory support. Check it right now in 2TB and 4TB editions for $1,599.99 and $1,999.99, respectively.Buffalo brings 4TB TeraStation III WSS NAS to America, streamers in tow originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 10 Jan 2010 07:04:00 EST. Disney's KeyChest is not DRM
Retrieved 236 Days Ago
From: Engadget Blog     Category: Technology
(By "Ben Drawbaugh") There's a lot going on at CES, and one of those things was a presentation by Disney explaining its KeyChest concept. We attended and was surprised to learn that KeyChest has almost nothing to do with DRM. We were rolling our eyes when we heard Disney proclaim that KeyChest was complementary to DECE, but now that we understand what KeyChest is, we agree. The easiest way to explain it is with an example and the most obvious to us is iTunes and Comcast. Both companies offer video on demand and use their own DRM to prevent copying. If both participated in KeyChest -- this isn't studio based -- and we bought a movie on iTunes, the next time we hit up Comcast VOD we'd be able to watch the same movie without paying again. The genius of the idea is how simple it is, basically the participants …

Toshiba introduces DisplayLink-enabled Dynadock V10 USB port replicator
Retrieved 236 Days Ago
From: Engadget Blog     Category: Technology
(By "Darren Murph") Don't call it a docking station. Toshiba's latest Dynadock is classified as a USB port replicator, but what makes this one a wee bit special is the integrated DisplayLink DL-165 chip that enables 1080p content to flow from a USB port and onto a DVI monitor. Put simply, this device acts just like a typical USB docking station, but with minimal bulk; as for inputs, you'll find four USB 2.0 sockets, a single DVI port, mic in, headphone out, a power port and support for resolutions as high as 1,920 x 1,080. It's available now in Europe for an undisclosed amount, but who knows if it'll ever head Stateside.Toshiba introduces DisplayLink-enabled Dynadock V10 USB port replicator originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 10 Jan 2010 08:02:00 EST. Monsoon adds streaming, sideloading sweetness to new Volcano placeshifting box
Retrieved 236 Days Ago
From: Engadget Blog     Category: Technology
(By "Richard Lawler") Blazing a different path from Sling or even its own HAVA line, Monsoon's Volcano is not just an HD placeshifting device -- it can play back video from attached storage devices, NAS or PCs, plus internet video from YouTube or CinemaNow. Existing remote DVR and streaming features are joined by sideloading, as it can deliver compressed recordings to compatible mobiles (Android, iPhone, BlackBerry, Symbian, Windows Mobile) over 3G for later offline viewing. Other additions include an OS X client, MPEG-4 support plus plans for downloadable apps like Boxee and an open SDK for developers. Pricing is set at $199 with 4GB of flash memory included or $299 with 250GB HDD. Check out a video of our quick demo of the client running on a Motorola DROID and a press release with all the other details …
